In March 2009, the Indian Army received inputs about heavily armed terrorists hiding in the Hafruda Forests of Kupwara, J&K. Major Mohit Sharma volunteered to lead the Special Forces team. During This Mission He crawled under heavy firing to evacuate two injured commandos. Engaged terrorists from extremely close range And get Shot. Eliminated multiple militants despite being critically wounded. Continued fighting until his last breath to secure his team’s safety.
For this supreme act of courage, Major Mohit Sharma was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra on 26 January 2010.
